This quartet turned in two of the most inspired and outright facemelting performances we’ve ever had the pleasure of hosting. Tonight, the band performs without at net, going completely improvisational with a special guest vocalist. If you wanna see something in the Gem City that you’ve not seen before and will never have the opportunity to see again, you don’t not want to miss the third week of Kuan at The Buddha Den NTRO/XPO. As a bonus special treat, we will also have power-poppers Zest of Yore opening this evening, on tour from Dallas, TX. As always, The Buddha Den NTRO/XPO is a FREE EVENT that takes place at Oregon Express, with music starting at 10 pm. See you there…

The band are currently putting the finishing touches on their soon-to-be-released double EP, which they plan to showcase throughout the month, and you can get a taste of that below. Kuan also have a slew of East Coast tour dates lined up for October…

…Having served in numerous local outfits over the years, the collective members of Kuan are anything but green. Certainly their sound falls in the post-rock realm, with its guitar-driven instrumental nature, but it’s also easy to hear much influence from the jazz, psychedelic, and classic rock realms as well. Over the course of September, we’re planning to hear one of the best unsung bands in Dayton stretch out and show an impressive musical range. Hope you can join us….

For FREE….

…well, this month we are extremely excited to be featuring young pop/punk quartet, All Alliteration Aside. The band recently issued their debut disc, In Angry Mob Form, and are making it available for FREE HERE. We’d highly recommend you grab this goodie, as it’s likely to end up as one of our favorite releases this year. While the band flaunt a healthy affection for some of the more notable practitioners in the pop/punk realm, they also show a flair for 70s rock moves and blazing guitar solos. Combined with tasteful synth melodies and passionate lyrics, the band could just as easily slip into the indie realm as well. Ultimately, this is a band that straddles enough stylistic lines to appeal to listeners, wherever they stand, on their own terms. A feat not easily accomplished these days…

…head on down to Oregon Express tonight to join us for a great night of music. Things get started at 10 pm sharp with The Space Race. All Alliteration Aside hits the stage at 11 pm. This is a FREE show for 21 & up. See you there…

MP3: All Alliteration Aside “Mistakes”
MP3: All Alliteration Aside “Gun Arms”

UPDATE: The Space Race will not be playing tonight. We just received word that Eric Butler has his arm in a sling, and thus will not be able to play. Stay tuned…

UPDATE: We have confirmed that David Payne will be opening this evening for The Buddha Den NTRO/XPO. Again, music starts at 10 pm. See you there…

…our featured performer last night was the one-man A/V experience that is Outside Residential. Although the music might have been more at home in a dance club, the audience didn’t seem to mind. Between imagery that featured everything from noir to anime, OR’s compositions married to the two media in a truly captivating way. In many ways, it was much more experiential than it was performance. Sadly, we were told that Outside Residential will be relocating at the end of October. Truly a loss for the Dayton music community…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SOT-xkIrtNI/AAAAAAAAObc/ORl5CgrUdH0/s320/IMG_9771.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252603192887981266" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SOT-rK1CsWI/AAAAAAAAObU/mwIqHFOyKWc/s320/IMG_9766.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252603083015500130" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SOT-jrS8ijI/AAAAAAAAObM/m11m--7CbHA/s320/IMG_9769.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5252602954291907122" />

…although we’ve been without Internet here at The Buddha Den for the last several days, we are still active and hosted our third NTRO/XPO last night at The Oregon Express. Opening the evening we had a fine trio of acoustic performers for the open mic portion of the evening, including the requisite set by AJ (along with a couple of tuned from Phil Whittaker), Ben Schwab (from Costa Mesa, CA), and newcomer Tyler Terry…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SNvDrD47xvI/AAAAAAAAOI4/1EdJq6zqm4s/s320/IMG_9578.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250004935176341234" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SNvDkgJOzNI/AAAAAAAAOIw/1YHMonEHk5w/s320/IMG_9584.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250004822501805266" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SNvDUbpgosI/AAAAAAAAOIo/Q6ZJsqzFeRs/s320/IMG_9591.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250004546417107650" />

…stepping into the featured performances for the night, Tin Toy Robot made their debut. The new band, featuring three members of local fave Astro Fang, tore through a brief but torrid set of punk-inflected synth-driven numbers that were destined to bore themselves into yr psyche. Augmented by projectors and and animatronic reindeer, the band certainly made quite the splash on the Dayton scene. Keep an eye out for them in the coming months…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SNvFGYsPocI/AAAAAAAAOJQ/1Pwv_zsS45E/s320/IMG_9602.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250006504128356802" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SNvE9bVLnmI/AAAAAAAAOJI/6oqJoTe4jnY/s320/IMG_9604.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250006350218108514" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SNvEkUn17yI/AAAAAAAAOJA/9TWGOKkl50k/s320/IMG_9611.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250005918920601378" />

…winding out the night, we had a subdued set from Engine the Gun. Due to some technical glitches, the typical loops that define Engine the Gun were absent on this night and, in an attempt to carry on, ETG proceeded with a short set of self-proclaimed “sad bastard music”. Regardless, Engine the Gun delivered a sleepy set that was a fine way to close out a Wednesday night…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SNvHahwuinI/AAAAAAAAOJw/ydruPjRYSyo/s320/IMG_9614.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250009049183718002" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SNvG7TKh6lI/AAAAAAAAOJg/J01I3zTqKLY/s320/IMG_9612.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250008512689465938" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SNvGzso1HXI/AAAAAAAAOJY/3E98uyaA-OI/s320/IMG_9613.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5250008382088486258" />

…on a brisk late summer evening, The Buddha Den NTRO/XPO kicked off at The Oregon Express. Despite some early technical setbacks, the Open Mic portion of the evening kicked off and we were treated to three fine acoustic sets. AJ kicked things off with a somber set of love-torn balladry, followed by the underrated Brandon Hawk, who also had an impromptu hand-drummer with him for the first time anywhere. Closing out the open mic segment, Derek Gullett served up a loose, rambling set that veered between the chaotic and sublime…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SMlYJfJopJI/AAAAAAAAMko/mjKF_UTI9Ag/s320/IMG_9379.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244820161053631634" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SMlYEnnGO6I/AAAAAAAAMkg/PoLad-Qls3g/s320/IMG_9384.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244820077425343394" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SMlX_swGBOI/AAAAAAAAMkY/aUBJmFC68Ok/s320/IMG_9390.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244819992905909474" />

…in only their second public appearance, State School hit the stage with a swagger that typically only comes from seasoned veterans. Although brimming with confidence, it should be noted that the trio are exceptionally humble and good-humored. Without any aid from amplification (that includes PA reinforcement), State School drew the room right to the cusp of the stage and held them there for the duration of their set. Armed with more ukuleles than we’ve ever seen, along with various toy pianos and keyboards, the band served up infectious little ditties lined with witty pop-culture references and the aforementioned good-humor. Recalling Moldy Peaches and any slew of K Records bands, we’re very excited to welcome State School to the Dayton music scene…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SMlUsBZHkgI/AAAAAAAAMkI/1Hm_tGFYcOE/s320/IMG_9400.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244816356314419714" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SMlUa0Zaq8I/AAAAAAAAMkA/X2iEQO_ezLI/s320/IMG_9396.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244816060768234434" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SMlUSi3PALI/AAAAAAAAMj4/Arf0hoI26Ak/s320/IMG_9402.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244815918622507186" />

…closing out the evening, we welcomed yet another new band to the scene, Hackplant. With their feet firmly dipping into the classic pool of hard rock tinged with experimental tendencies and alt-rock sensibilities, the young group showed some promise. Although many of their ideas simply seem to lack focus at times, the musicianship is certainly in place. In particular, the guitar work of Josh Deane caught the ear of the audience. Hackplant may be young, but they seem hungry to make their mark in Dayton…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SMlZlH0tjZI/AAAAAAAAMlA/zkbVBQU3fQg/s320/IMG_9408.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244821735339822482" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SMlZeTbHu-I/AAAAAAAAMk4/Em5cxChyZy8/s320/IMG_9409.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244821618194627554" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SMlZYkAHf_I/AAAAAAAAMkw/G7--Tdxk1Eo/s320/IMG_9411.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5244821519565553650" />
