Their impassioned set of hard-drinking Americana made a strong impression on those in attendance and, as a result, they’ve been asked to return to Dayton tonight to play at Pearl/Vexx. The quartet’s most recent album, Pearls, is the kind of album you just sink into and live in for several months at a stretch. The band is making a buzz in their hometown as well, evidenced by the invite to do a WOXY Lounge Acts set today at 4 pm. Catch them on the air this afternoon and then head down to Pearl/Vexx tonight to catch them with The Scarring Party (Milwaukee), The Henrique and Jeffro Show, and Yeti Master.

…with the winds dying down and the temperature staying a little above freezing, it seemed like a great night to go catch a show at Pearl (or Vexx, or whatever it’s officially called now…). Unfortunately, we arrived just after the first band, La Dispute, had finished. Much to our chagrin, we were instantly informed by half a dozen attendees of the awesomeness we had just missed…

…so, we settled in to catch Lungs‘ set in celebration of the release of their 7″ on The Mylene Sheath label. For the first time that we’ve seen them, the band evaded all technical difficulties and turned in an incredibly powerful set. Although the star of the set was Mick’s new kick drum (allegedly purchased from screamo powerhouse The Devil Wears Prada), the metallic, yet soaring, guitars found a near-perfect balance of drone and motion, progressing at just the moment when any idea was in danger of becoming stale. The band’s ability to draw out and unfold their ideas at this glacial pace may frustrate some, but really makes it for us…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SZWpHuMIzRI/AAAAAAAAQfA/K0wg-1ODYUg/s320/IMG_0782.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302330086421744914" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SZWo-o7f12I/AAAAAAAAQe4/whlkO2A4veQ/s320/IMG_0800.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302329930390951778" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SZWoychvDLI/AAAAAAAAQew/fyDV1RDOyaY/s320/IMG_0807.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302329720903240882" />

…closing out the evening, Toads and Mice started a bit slowly, with a few missed notes dashing all hopes of a perfect game. By mid-set, however, they had found sure footing in their newer material. With their winding arrangements, Toads and Mice possess a dreamlike essence: floating and spacious one moment, savage grinding the next, all narrated by the haunting, ethereal vocals of guitarist Dustin Rose. We just have to love a band that can get a crowd alternately dancing and headbanging uncontrollably all within the span of 40 minutes…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SZWpilD3YMI/AAAAAAAAQfY/-uH4h2-jALU/s320/IMG_0817.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302330547827597506" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SZWpYeyshKI/AAAAAAAAQfQ/qN9w5uwzSFs/s320/IMG_0835.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302330374346278050" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SZWpTCreHII/AAAAAAAAQfI/7PmgG3htLS0/s320/IMG_0844.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302330280900435074" />

…with the cold beginning to bear down on the Gem City, we gathered at Pearl yet again for another great Thursday show. Opening the evening, the sprawling sonic landscape that is Sleepybird offered up a an uplifting set of hypnotic tunes. From the dramatic entrance of the marching drum to the soaring, anthemic surges, Sleepybird demonstrated yet again why they are one of the finest, most unique, outfits currently going in Dayton…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SQIDkeAuZ4I/AAAAAAAAPJ8/qXTw7wJtdRs/s320/IMG_0228.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260771239788439426" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SQIDWXzBf9I/AAAAAAAAPJ0/xU16hju31-c/s320/IMG_0230.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260770997602189266" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SQIC4FlziXI/AAAAAAAAPJs/0zUAr9YoyIs/s320/IMG_0238.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260770477318834546" />

…next up we had the colorfully costumed Everthus the Deadbeats from Indianapolis. With their set drawing largely from their incredible new album, John Kill and the Microscopic Lullaby, the psychedelic swagger of ETD held the crowds attention throughout. With bounding synths and searing guitar work, the subtle, demanding grooves of the rhythm section provided unending support for the group’s freak-pop melodies. With any luck, the band will soon find receptive ears throughout the land…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SQIEK4wpS9I/AAAAAAAAPKU/DJ06xNfxmOA/s320/IMG_0259.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260771899803782098" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SQIEAt-Mg-I/AAAAAAAAPKM/Ta_AkRXZ14Y/s320/IMG_0242.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260771725109134306" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SQID16VRy-I/AAAAAAAAPKE/J07MoBc7u0Q/s320/IMG_0256.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260771539448613858" />

…rounding out the evening, the always-impeccable Toads and Mice served up yet another rousing set of cathartic exuberance. Although we’ve covered this band at length over the last year, Toads and Mice solidly remain at the pinnacle of the Dayton scene. With a tour planned for next month, we can only hope that the band are successful in exporting what has emerged as one of the most engaging sounds in town…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SQIF_maGxZI/AAAAAAAAPK0/IXsWdXeH3x4/s320/IMG_0306.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260773904922101138" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SQIFnG0p0eI/AAAAAAAAPKs/SPqHu2zU8Zc/s320/IMG_0295.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260773484126654946" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SQIEXYsmPpI/AAAAAAAAPKc/zEYojIYwtB8/s320/IMG_0320.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5260772114535169682" />

…for the few that opted to head out to Dayton for this rare Monday night show, they were treated with an incredible night of inspired performances. Luckily, those that took the stage this night dug deep and delivered the goods…

…although burdened with an ailment, The Happy Planets (aka Eric) mustered up more energy on this night than most six-piece bands in good health. Roaming the dancefloor, as well as nearly every surrounding surface, The Happy Planets got the small crowd up and moving from the start and dished out a highly entertaining set of electronic dance music that ultimately left his dress on the floor and the man dancing around in briefs…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SP4fPFhkyQI/AAAAAAAAO7E/lRrSKFWo1VQ/s320/IMG_0143.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259675758856816898" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SP4fAOIHkpI/AAAAAAAAO68/H1f1AtUudnI/s320/IMG_0152.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259675503467926162" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SP4e2xvqn5I/AAAAAAAAO60/79Fv3cu6_Eg/s320/IMG_0155.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259675341230350226" />

…next up we had the dapper Sitandance open with a dramatic reading of the standard “If You Wanna Sing Out”, which gave way into an exploratory set of freak pop and free jazz. Augmented on this night with a saxophonist, the band delved even further than usual into their psyche-pop regions. Oscillating somewhere between Beefheart and Waits, the band is certainly one of the most unique acts going in Dayton at the moment…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SP4f2mIo42I/AAAAAAAAO7c/4AUDGsfEnq4/s320/IMG_0158.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259676437625496418" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SP4fsyjXQdI/AAAAAAAAO7U/Po8G6j-2ycU/s320/IMG_0173.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259676269160120786" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SP4fekOpDpI/AAAAAAAAO7M/q8S52VVVqhc/s320/IMG_0167.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259676024796941970" />

…in from Columbus, Blastronauts rolled in on this night at least a couple of members short. Although the band’s funk-tinged indie rock had a few shining moments, the lack of a bass player left a slightly thin sound and visibly hindered at least one member of the band. We’re hoping Blastronauts are able to secure a steady lineup soon, as their songs are more than deserving of a full reading…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SP4guMufk7I/AAAAAAAAO70/gsRBf5eGsh0/s320/IMG_0174.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259677392877622194" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SP4gkPlv8ZI/AAAAAAAAO7s/s7T18tsVrNQ/s320/IMG_0175.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259677221847560594" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SP4gF1YMe-I/AAAAAAAAO7k/bcw2ao9XLP0/s320/IMG_0176.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259676699415313378" />

…closing out the night, St. Louis outfit Gentleman Auction House rose to the occasion and delivered an epic set for the dwindling crowd. Armed with dual drummers and keyboardists, as well as all manner of percussion and wind instruments, GAH possess a unique blend of earnest sentimentality a la Conor Oberst or Arcade Fire which is perfectly offset by an Elephant 6-sized playfulness that always keeps things in the fun zone. Although witnessed by only a handful of Daytonians, it is certain that those few will certainly spread the gospel of Gentleman Auction House…
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SP4hqbjqA9I/AAAAAAAAO8M/FhqDehZ2YIA/s320/IMG_0196.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259678427650851794" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SP4hOC9Mq2I/AAAAAAAAO8E/6ydXOTaLZ4w/s320/IMG_0186.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259677940010756962" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9k4pSNJAuEc/SP4hEsbjMXI/AAAAAAAAO78/K7lX8tEwy2s/s320/IMG_0199.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5259677779345224050" />
