…a while back we introduced you all to a great new video resource for Dayton music [and more], The Music Seen. As presented by Andy Rowe, his live footage of a variety of Dayton acts both past and present has certainly helped to liven up local music coverage. Well, today Rowe announced that The Music Seen will now become an interactive platform via YouTube Direct links right on their site. We would encourage anyone and everyone with the technology available to use this opportunity to its maximum potential…
…and just because, here’s some excellent footage that Andy Rowe shot a while back of Astro Fang at Blind Bob’s with special guest Sean Patton of Electric Banana. Enjoy…
…For the past five years, the Dayton music scene has patiently awaited the formal recorded debut from one of the city’s most revered live acts: Human Reunion. Featuring members of such Dayton outfits as The Dirty Walk, 8-Bit Revival, Let’s Crash, and Cigarhead, Human Reunion channel several elements of the city’s storied musical past into a danceable, yet deliciously demented sound. While the quartet has established themselves as one of Dayton’s must-see live acts, the band is poised to finally issue their first recorded artifacts in 2010. All slated for release on Detroit imprint Five Three Dial Tone Records, Human Reunion will issue the Carbonics 7” in May, followed by rarities on a cassette-only issue. The band’s long-awaited debut album, Arc de Square [recorded by Dayton expatriate, Brainiac alumni, and Enon leader, John Schmersal], should be out Summer 2010 on MinorManor. You can catch Human Reunion tonight in Detroit with a free show at The Pike Room and/or tomorrow, Saturday, February 13 at Blind Bob’s with metal/dance duo Electric Banana and Silo’s Wasted Space…

…we’re always very excited to hear about new weekly events taking place here in Dayton. Even better is when they’re free, right? Well, here’s a new free weekly event we’d like to announce: Modern Mondays @ Pacchia [410 E. Fifth St. in the Oregon District]. Under the guidance of your host, Adam Sabin [of New Vega], Modern Mondays is fueled by its audience. The idea is pretty simple: bring in new music you’d like to share and Sabin will spin it. Seems like a good way to find out about new music, right? Right…
…On top of that, Sabin is giving local bands an opportunity to spin their latest tracks for his audience. Tonight, he’ll be hosting Electric Banana, who will be spinning their recently-released sophomore effort, Black Rubber [preview below]. Next week, Sabin will be hosting Stone the Mayor Sheriffs, who will be spinning their debut EP and having a “Pie the Mayor Sheriffs” pie throwing contest. outside we’ll have a pie throwing station set up. Members of STMS will stand at the pie station and contestants will stand on a line and attempt to throw pies to the face of STMS. We’re looking forward to who else might show up soon….
…yet another great reason to stop in: Sabin will be giving out some free concert tickets. This week he’ll have some tix for Modest Mouse at Lifestyles Pavilion in Columbus on August 24th. Next week, tix for Ra Ra Riot at The Basement in Columbus on September 14…
…Sabin will also be hosting special guest DJs in coming weeks, including Jason Watkins [of Mouth of the Architect] and Nick Testa [Nighbeast]. Modern Mondays kicks off at 9 pm every Monday. If you’re at all inclined to get yr band heard or would like to take a turn at sharing the music yr loving these days, we highly recommend you stop in and check it out…
…if you were fortunate enough to have been part of last evening at South Park Tavern, you’ll likely acknowledge that it was an incredible evening of music and that the audience rose to the occasion as well, feeding enthusiasm back to the bands. Openers Electric Banana and The Turkish Delights both turned in sets that had the crowds on their feet and wanting more. For one band, however, the evening served as a goodbye. Here are a few words from Lucas of Hospital Garden…
Hospital Garden is moving to Chicago. When I moved to Dayton two years ago, it was never with the intent of permanence. I hoped to complete graduate school, and, once again, move on. However, I did not anticipate making so many amazing friendships. I was lucky enough to have met Ian and Sarah, thus forming Hospital Garden. The shows we have played and the songs we have created have been far beyond my expectations, thus moving as a band makes sense right now. It’s hard to leave the people and bands that we love here, but in Chicago there is a lot of opportunity in my field (Community Counseling), and a lot of new venues to play. Sarah and Ian are also going to be finding employment and continuing their educations there. We’re still young and it’s the right time to do something like this. We love Dayton and we love playing and hanging out here. We will be back regularly for as long as we are a band. Naturally, we will miss you all and can’t wait to see you again in the near future. Thank you so much for coming to our shows, listening to our demos, and singing along to our songs. It means more to us than you know.
Love, Hospital Garden.
…in addition to their migration north, Hospital Garden are gearing up to release their debut album. Stay tuned for more on that as details emerge…
…in adhering to the sad and sickening status quo, one of Dayton’s finest will soon be relocating. In the process of becoming one of our favorites over the past year or so, Hospital Garden emerged as one of the Gem City’s leading contenders. Their scheduled departure to Chicago this fall saddens us greatly, but we’re very excited for their future. Tonight we will say goodbye with a very special show at South Park Tavern, featuring the next wave of Dayton goodness, The Turkish Delights and Electric Banana. Come on out and help us say goodbye…
…we’re pretty excited about our FREE weekly at Oregon Express, The Buddha Den NTRO/XPO, tonight as we’ve got one of our Dayton favorites, Electric Banana. The duo actually hail from the northern outpost of Troy, but they’ve been busy making a name for themselves in the city over the last year on the strength of their self-released debut, Denim on Denim, and their hyperactive live sets. The band’s juxtpaosed loves of sludgy guitars and ultradanceablity lands them in a zone that keeps feet moving and heads bobbing in unison. EB are currently putting finishing touches on their follow-up, so stay tuned…
…you’ve got a great opportunity tonight to catch a few of Dayton’s finest young bands, as well as a special treat out-of-towner over at Pearl. The Buddha Den Presents has put together what we feel is a very exciting bill featuring the garage/psyche/freakpop of Everything, Now! from Indianapolis. You’ve also got three great young locals that are building some good buzz: The Northwest Ordinance, Boombarian, and Electric Banana. Trust us, you don’t wanna miss this one…
…racing back to Daytonia afer our appearance on WOXY’s Local Lixx program last evening, we said goodbye to July with a great night of music at Pearl, courtesy of Fab Gear. Opening the evening were Troy’s Electric Banana with their patented brand of dancefloor-filling guitar-slashing anthems. As the duo’s backing tracks oozed big, sensual beats that got the kids moving, the guitar army of two fired off big riffs and dual guitar solos that elevated the whole mess to an absolute frenzy. If you haven’t caught Electric Banana yet, you need to make it a point to do so… …next up we had the primal punk of BoomBarian. Armed with a refreshing sense of humor and an unabashed love of what they’re doing, the trio recalled female punk pioneers The Slits, as well as the riot grrrl bands coming from the American northwest. Even their cover of the Stones’ “Mother’s Little Helper” was draped in the sounds that can only come from Boombarian. Really, how can you not love a band with a girl drummer that stands up and puts baking pans over top of her cymbals? …although we weren’t sold on Thee Pistol Whips in previous reviews, on this night the band opened up a fury that we simply cannot deny. Gone were the organ and apparently two of the go-go singers and instead we found a band that leaving behind its garage tendencies in favor a much more muscular, guitar-driven sound. Laced with tinges of surf and favoring the sounds of vintage Detroit, we’re looking for this band to improve even more in the coming months… …closing out the evening, Brian Hoeflich & the All-Nighters served up a giant slab of vintage surf/garage that filled the dancefloor. Pulling songs from rock n’ roll’s earliest days (including a rollicking cover of Eddie Cochran’s “Something Else”), by the end of the evening the club could very easily have been mistaken for Delta House to any passerby…
